Chapter 60, "Disinterested Love in Parents," asserts that while love guides parental actions, it must be the right kind of love—disinterested and sacrificial—to be truly meritorious and beneficial. Improper parental affection, whether too little, too much, or partial, stems from self-love and vanity, leading parents to prioritize their own desires over God's rights and their children's true welfare, especially regarding their spiritual salvation. True Christian parental love recognizes that children are not a "paying investment" but souls ultimately belonging to God, demanding a focus on their spiritual well-being above all else, lest such self-serving affection result in both earthly and eternal misfortune.
