Annum Sacrum - Consecration to the Sacred Heart
Encyclical Letter of Pope Leo XIII - May 25, 1898
In his 1898 encyclical Annum Sacrum, Pope Leo XIII mandated the consecration of the entire human race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, emphasizing Christ's supreme and universal kingship, founded on His divine nature as Son of God and His redemptive act. He explains that while all are already subject to Christ's power, this act of consecration is a voluntary offering of love and homage, symbolizing humanity's reciprocal love for Jesus' infinite charity. This widespread devotion is presented as a crucial means to heal societal ills, restore peace and order, and draw all people, including those outside the Church, into Christ's loving dominion, ultimately leading to greater faith, increased love, and salvation.
