Listen now | From the audiobook Explanation of Catholic Morals - Blasphemy is any thought, word, or deed that disrespects or dishonors God, His attributes, Jesus Christ, the Blessed Sacrament, the Blessed Mother, saints, Holy Scripture, religion, the Church, or her ministers, all of which are intimately connected to God. It can range from direct revilings (often from atheists or heretics) to indirect affronts, such as attributing divine qualities to creatures or questioning God's providence during adversity. While less common than other sins, blasphemy is a grave offense stemming from hatred and a direct revolt against the Creator, though often committed in ignorance. The text provides two historical anecdotes illustrating God's swift punishment for such impiety.
When I was a Protestant I questioned God’s providence because of adversity. It seemed like that was all we ever got. Sickness, financial problems, ghetto housing with roaches, old beat up cars, etc. seeing other people who seemed to have so much, but we seemed to have little or nothing. I presume I was guilty of blasphemy but I didn’t know anything at the time.
It may have been a venial sin. In order for a sin to be a mortal sin it must have three elements: 1) Grave matter, 2) full knowledge, 3) deliberate consent. When you were a Protestant you had no knowledge of what mortal sin was, so my guess is at most it would have been venial sin. But it wouldn't have mattered because you weren't Catholic, so regardless of that you were outside the Church which was a far greater issue. Now that you know the truth, this would be a mortal sin.
As a Protestant I thought I was in the church and that the catholic community was just another group. I was surprised to find that NO I wasn’t! Thanks for the advice.

In the Protestant tradition that I came from there was no venial or mortal sin. Just sin.
